The Question

My cat has been going into the garage to sleep under my car, in AZ, in the summer. The last time she did this, she was sick. This time, I'm not noticing any illness. 3 months ago, the vet said her kidneys looked great. Now, she's drinking a lot and urinating a lot. Why is she sleeping in the garage? Thank you.

Hi Tobey, thanks for writing in.

Wow, 20 is an impressive age!

Given the hot weather, it is likely that Bebe has found a spot that is nice and cool and out of the way. Make sure there is no chance she could be exposed to any antifreeze, as this is deadly if ingested.

What does worry me is the increase in drinking and urinating, as this is often a sign of kidney problems or diabetes in cats. For an elderly cat, a lot can change in 3 months, so I would recommend booking her in for repeat blood tests, preferably with a urinalysis too.

I would also try to increase the amount of moisture in her food and make sure she has a few different places that are quiet and cool where she can get out of the heat.

I hope this helps,

Dr Karyn
